Sarong Secrets eBook Su Kim Lee Reviews
Yes. Just as good as Kebaya Tales, the peranakan chinese stories told reminded me of my maternal grandma. Remembered how she used to wear sarong at home everyday, up to her armpit... sexy... Sarong was also worn by my late father at home, everyday. Various types of sarong with many western and south east asian influences were well illustrated in this book. A book that will be timeless for all the cherish.
Following her best-seller, 'Kebaya Tales Of Matriarchs, Maidens, Mistresses and Matchmakers', Lee Su Kim's latest book extends her exploration of the Nyonya's charming and colourful wardrobe, and essential accessories. In her now familiar and well established style and format, 'Sarong Secrets Of Love, Loss and Longing' contains 12 short stories inspired by the motifs, symbols and events in Lee Su Kim's Peranakan cultural heritage. Taken separately, each tale describes, intrigues and rightly entertains, but together there is a compelling symmetry and synthesis across the book that drives the reader to want to know and understand more. Let me try to explain.
In terms of writing, the Sarong Kebaya project is about taking the reader into the locations, moments and life experiences of a culture moving through inter-generational change. Yet, Lee Su Kim's narratives aren't illusory. Rather, there's a pervading realism evident through multidimensional plots that reveal the troubles and dangers present in the world, personal conflicts between friends, family members and strangers, and individual struggles where strengths and weaknesses are blended and exposed for what they really are. For example, in the opening story, `Scarlet Revenge', a husband's insult both tortures and liberates his downtrodden wife, and returns to confront him directly in the flesh.
There's a lot to share in this small book--innocence, sexuality, inappropriateness, meanness, ingratitude, memories, aromas and oppression to mention a few topics--but not just anything. For what Lee Su Kim notices and writes about (culture, nationhood, traditions, language, values etc.) is not only what she sees and thinks, but is fundamentally what she cares about and considers important and necessary to record and communicate for prosperity. This is the author as leader and activist at her celebratory best.
Overall, 'Sarong Secrets' is an entertaining and engaging read operating on various levels. Although I live and work in Singapore and have visited Penang and Malacca several times, there are many Peranakan dishes, details and locations I've failed to notice because I could not `see' them even though they were right in front of me. Through these stories I now have a lens and the motivation to invest more time and effort in learning about what so many of us take for granted our heritage, uniqueness and the responsibility of passing on our knowledge, values and beliefs to generations to come.
Excellent read. Author should have more of her other books on . Malaysian Flavours and Manglish to name a couple.
